Have you ever seen an aurora? The light show in the sky? What about an aurora against a red sky as the sun is rising?
Neither have I. I was born on such a day however. My eyes sealed shut, my green fur wet with birthing fluid. Then the roughest most comforting texture soothing me urging me to move. Nuzzling my way to longer coarser fur eager to feed my nose burrowing into warmth and my mouth moving searching for the thing that would give me substance; that thing that would help me to live.
I lived that way for nearly four months. Slowly becoming aware of other moving things beside me. Then came the moment when my eyes started to slowly come open. Blurred colors slowly made their way to my eyes. A dark almost black green was the first color i saw.
I grew steadily as did my sisters and brothers. Our legs wobbled but we could move our teeth were small but we nipped. Before long we chewed at soft meat our minds growing curious and our differences becoming noticeable.
Swampfoot was the darkest of us his green fur looked almost black, but his markings. Oh his markings! He had double stripes lighter than the rest of him it looked as though he had ivy growing about his form just like our mother. And three tails!
Leafnest was the lightest of us she was beautiful. Three traits she showed leafy green double stripes ran along her tails and lower legs. Dark tipped paws, tail and ears stood out against her Fallow Deer hide that looked almost aqua in color. Then there were the most gorgeous markings mystic runes. She looked most like our father.
Collaredvine was the most different of us he was kind. He took after a great grandfather of ours Ornate spangled and Digital runes. Marked his fur dark green with the light colored lines across his body. The collar around his throat being the most dominate thing.
Me well I'm Greenwick. I kinda look like the grass maybe a shade or two darker. I'm also plain and common like grass. I show no markings at all. They are there in my blood some where. Where however i do not know?
I suppose i was green with envy when i left. I had learned all i needed to know to survive. Yet i had no markings. Nothing that made me beautiful or handsome. I guess i just had to find myself.

Chapter 1
My paws patted softly against the ground as loped towards the trees. A faint sprinkling of rain tickling my hide and making me look for shelter. It had been raining off and on all day making me hunt it the short breaks it gave. Alas it seems as though everything is staying indoors sleeping through this day.
I would have to settle for mushrooms from the forest again. Not that was a bad thing. They were easy to find and tasted well enough but they hardly sustained or filled me up. I needed meat something to put that spring in my step. Though since leaving my family hunting had become harder.
I could no long chase prey into my siblings clutches or rely on them to finish off the prey should i get injured. It was making me stronger physically with all the running and attacking I had to do...yet it also made me weaker for if my prey still managed to escape I had wasted all my energy for nothing. Energy that takes time to come back and thus leaves me hungry.
I needed a pack and yet i refused to go back to my own. Why? I can be so hard headed. Jealousy of their markings is what made me leave. Shame of why is left keeps me away. It shouldn't have mattered. They were good to me; they were family.
Letting out a deep sigh as my paws worked at the wet soil. I stopped letting my mind wander but instead concentrated on digging up the mushrooms i had found. My ears twitch with each paw full of dirt listening to where it landed behind me. The brown mushrooms before me came up from the roots easily.
I ate them quickly satisfying my hunger for now. The rain seemed to be staying this time as i heard it hitting the leaves. I also heard something else...movement. My head laid low to the ground i slowly began sidestepping into the brush. I often disliked encounters with others who I ran into.
This time was different though. She stepped out of the brush across from me slowly. Hers eyes judging me even as her steps said she was ready to fight. Her ears back and mouth drawn showing her displeasure at meeting me.
I stopped my eyes combing her body as she came into full view. She was beautiful. Her ears, tail and belly such a lovely light green. The blue on her pelt looking like running water over her green hide. She looked like morning dew on a pink rose petal. It made my heart ring in my ears.
I backed away showing i did not want to fight. My ears remained back but i laid down tail swishing behind me. I hoped to come off playful and likable to her.
She stopped a moment taking in my behavior. Then she pounced at me making me back away in surprise.
"Don't think for a second that just because I'm female makes me weaker than you," she growled at me.
"I-i wasn't," I began to say.
"You weren't what? Acting like a playful male in order to swoop me away. I've ran into your type before. Arrogant and only looking for some tail," she huffed at me her eyes hard.
I said nothing and backed away. I'll admit i was love struck and thought that way. I was far from arrogant though. I suppose the best thing to do was to walk away.
"You're not going to defend yourself," she asked frowning.
"I...really didn't mean any harm," i said unable to think of anything else.
Her brow furrowed at me. Her ears going forward as she looked me over. She moved away from me her nose low to the ground to sniff at what remained mushroom wise. Her eyes remained on me though. Her wariness making me uncomfortable and ready to leave.
"I'll just go," I finally managed to say turning away from her.
"I didn't say you could," she called after me.
I stopped confused.
"You have a good nose finding these," she said prancing up beside me a truffle in her mouth. She ate it quickly. "Listen up i got an idea. Since you seem to be complacent; why don't we do this. You find food and I'll protect us."
"I don't...really know you," I said hesitantly unsure if i wanted someone so forceful around me.
"You are right introductions first. I'm Dewfern and you are," she asked not letting it go.
"Greenwick," i answered.
"Well Greenwick this could be beneficial to us both," she said slapping me on the back. "Come on we have food to eat and places to discover," she said walking ahead of me.
I couldn't help but to follow her. She seemed so...amazing. I'll never forget that as we came out of the woods the sun started shining. As though me meeting her was all it took to stop the rain.
