This is Rose. She's a reserved and pragmatic young woman who recently joined the guard. Tonight is the allyearly Halloween Ball and even though she is very excited about it, she didn't quite know which style to go for, as it is her first time attending. In the end she settled for a slim and elegant dress that allowes her the freedom to move easily while still fitting into the glamorous setting. In case it gets colder towards the later part of the night she brought her shawl along as well. Lastly, even though her roommate strongly advised against it, she brought her lance and staff along. Firstly, because you never know what might happen and secondly, because she had felt oddly exposed without them. I guess even new habits are hard to get rid off...

This one is inspired by the fantasy book that I am currently writing!

THE WITCH OF MORTEM

The witch of Mortem is said to harvest souls to prolong her own life, after being banished by her village and sent to die in the red desert. Luckily for her, she was discovered by the cult of Mortem and quickly became their beloved priestess. Now, whispers of her existence travel all across the desert, but if you are chosen to become her sacrifice, it is already far too late.

The Summerlight Fairy

Long before the forest had names, and long before the Sylesties learned which paths led south, the changing of the seasons was a dangerous thing.
In those days, summer did not leave gently. The warmth vanished with the setting sun, and winter came creeping through the valleys without warning. Many Sylesties, particularly the young and the weary, were caught unprepared.
One autumn, a little fairy came upon a shivering Sylesti beneath a fallen oak. The creature was much too weak to continue its journey, and the fairy, having neither shelter nor fire to offer, could do little but sit beside it.
She spoke to it of warmer days, of sun-dappled meadows and flowers that bowed beneath the weight of honeybees. She told it of the long afternoons when the forest hummed with life, and of the pleasant warmth of stones that had spent all day beneath the sun.
As she spoke, a golden light gathered around them.
At first, she mistook it for the last of the evening sunlight. But the sun had long since disappeared, and the forest around them was dark.
The light came instead from the fallen leaves, from the roots beneath the earth, and from the old oak whose branches sheltered them. All the warmth those things had gathered throughout the summer had begun to answer her.
By morning, the little Sylesti had regained enough strength to continue its journey.
The fairy accompanied it south, and wherever they traveled, the last remnants of summer seemed to follow.
Only later would she learn to gather that warmth into a lantern, preserving it against the coming frost. And longer than that would she pass on this duty.

~~~
The little fairy looked as though autumn itself had gathered her up and carried her through the forest, depositing half of it upon her along the way.
Her dress was fashioned from the petals of the season's last blooming flowers: golden chrysanthemums, rust-colored marigolds, and the fading pinks of late autumn asters. The petals overlapped in delicate, uneven layers, some still soft and vibrant, others beginning to curl and brown at their edges. A few had already come loose, leaving a little trail behind her wherever she went.
She appeared to have collected a good portion of the forest without meaning to. Maple leaves clung to her skirts, burrs had tangled themselves in her hair, and a small twig protruded rather conspicuously from behind one ear.
Perched atop her head was a magnificent crown of golden leaves, each one delicately wrought to resemble the foliage of the oldest trees in the forest. It was the traditional adornment of a Summerlight Keeper, passed down through generations, and quite possibly the grandest thing about her.
Unfortunately, it was also much too large.
The headpiece had a habit of slipping over one eye whenever she bent forward, and she was forever pushing it back into place. It had evidently been made for someone considerably taller, or at least someone who knew how to carry herself with a little more dignity.
That was how you came upon her, quite by accident, of course. She had been fluttering rather frantically between the trees, peering beneath fallen leaves and around the roots of old oaks as though searching for something terribly important. Her crown, having slipped forward once again, obscured nearly half her face, though she seemed far too preoccupied to notice. She was so intent on whatever she hoped to find that she flew directly into you.
"Oh! I'm terribly sorry, I didn't see you there!"
The little fairy stumbles backward, clutching a lantern nearly a third of her size. Its amber light flickers wildly, and she gives it a worried glance before looking back up at you.
"You haven't seen any Sylesties passing through here, have you? I've been looking for the last of them all evening, and I'm afraid I've gotten a little turned around."
She pauses, brushing a stray leaf from her hair.
"Oh, goodness, where are my manners? I'm supposed to introduce myself first!"
She straightens, looking rather pleased to have remembered.
"I'm the new Keeper of the Summerlight! It's my job to gather up all the warmth before the last summer sunset and keep it safe in this lantern. See?"
She lifts it proudly. Inside, a little golden flame dances against the glass.
"Then, when the nights start getting colder, I use it to guide the migrating Sylesties somewhere warm. Some of the little ones have never made the journey before, you know, and they get awfully frightened of the dark."
Her smile falters as she glances toward the trees.
"Only... I think I may have lost the ones I was supposed to be guiding."
For a moment, she looks utterly miserable.
"The old Keeper made it sound so easy! Follow the stars, keep the lantern lit, and whatever you do, don't let the last of summer go out before everyone is safe."
She says that second part in an odd voice, punctuating the air with a rhythmic, up-and-down pulse of her index finger, though it's clear she isn't saying it to you.
She looks down at the dwindling flame, then back at you with a hopeful smile.
"You wouldn't happen to be traveling south, would you? I could really use someone who knows their way around!"
*I just watched the Tinker Belle movies with my floor mates :P so I'm very entertained by all things fairy right now (secret of the wings is peak still)
Legends tell of a peaceful coastal nation with bountiful resources and amiable citizens. But this kingdom holds a dark secret. The royal lineage is said to be haunted by a terrible curse. By nightfall, the first prince morphs into a horrible beast and slips silently into the water. Those who live by the water are terrorized by a monster with multiple wings, a long spiked tail, and some even recount it to have hundreds of tentacles. all reports of the beast have differing features and sizes, some with great mandibles and piercing claws, others with torn fins and horns. But one thing stays the same: the central figure of a human body, distorted beyond recognition, with a great-toothed grin and black eyes spilling miasma.
