Rubies are Currency and you can buy stuff with them such as items, or pets(not avail rn) you can even buy peridot which is a larger currecny. Eventually you will earn a trading badge and will be able to trade with other players! items for rubies/peridot or rubies/peridot for items! ^-^ You also found a trait chest which can be opened to find a trait adder or subtractor! some are specific and some aren't! You may explore again.
