The Spirit of Fall

Chilly winds slow down into a cool breeze, the colorful leaves rustling against each other, but something feels off. The Spirit is missing. Just like a rushing waterfall, the autumn has swept away quickly. Did everyone forget about the Spirit? Granted, this year hasn't been the kindest, but that is the Spirit's purpose, to lift everyone's spirit up high. Poor little Spirit, sitting on a dead tree's branch, watching the people decorate their homes for Christmas and winter festivities. They heave a sigh and hop off the branch, the ripe, crisp leaves beneath crunching upon impact.
"So much for the Spirit of Fall..." the Spirit grumbles, fading into the distance as the last leaf turns and falls.

Every Halloween, when the moon is full
From deep below the waves, he is pulled.
Haunting the beach for glittering treasure,
Coins he seeks not, souls are his pleasure.

Nothing will hinder him, his loot he will find,
On this beach where the innocent stride.
Fairer than jewels the shining mortals be,
Their final breaths fast stolen by he.

Hear not his approach as he comes for his due,
He takes what's owed with nary a wail.
Eyes weeping not tears but marked by the sea,
Mouth fastened behind threads of algae.

Warned ye' be matey, never to get near
This lingering ghost of yesteryear.
Heed not my warning, the choice of a clown.
You won't be the first that he's dragged down...

On the night of the harvest moon in one particular farm community, farmers stay indoors. Legend has it that a farmer went outside one year, and when his back was to the moon he noticed that his shadow was not dark but shown a milky light like the moon. He turned quickly and saw a similarly colored figure with a handful of his wheat crop in hand before the figure vanished. The next morning his fields were ruined.

Birch, Spirit of Autumn

As the end of Summer nears, Birch begins to summon cool breezes, bringing a chill into the air. He causes the leaves to float down gracefully, watching every year as the children laugh with the joy he brings. He oversees the autumn harvest, preparing the crops for their final stage of life as farmers begin to collect them. During his reign, Birch lights the way for lonely souls with his lantern, providing them a safe passage to wherever they need to go. In return, the spirits pay him with a single maple leaf. No one knows why he requests them, or why he cannot just pick them himself. It's rumoured that each leaf holds a piece of Birch's soul, yet he has neither confirmed nor denied these suspicions.
Unlike his siblings, Birch doesn't have a familiar, however he isn't bothered by it. Ever since he was a young child, he's always preferred to work alone. Shrouded in mystery, nobody knows much about Birch. Perhaps that is why Autumn is such a curious season. You never know the surprises it brings - there's something new each and every year.

Samwell the Scarecrow

Travel over the bridge, through the woods, and down the winding road, and you will find yourself at a lonely, quiet farm surrounded by a golden sea of corn fields as far as the eye can see. The whole place is somber and eerily still, save for a number of crows that seem to frequent the area, and an occasional gentle breeze that rustles through the tall stalks and leaves. Here in the middle of nowhere, the only reminder of life is a shoddy old farmhouse standing tall against the elements; though at first glance it looks ready to crumble at any moment, it also somehow looks untouched, like its state of disrepair has neither worsened nor improved in the previous years... as if preserved in time, and preserved by some strong force that refuses to let it fall. This land is known to have remained in the same family since its construction, but no one in the local community can recall the last time they ever encountered the owners - or rather, owner, himself, let alone anyone at that farm whenever they've happened to pass by. Little do they know, the owner actually never leaves the property; it's just that no one knows where to look for him... and those that tried met with an untimely demise.
In life, Samwell was said to be a solitary man, and a bit of a grumpy one, too. He kept to himself and was very protective of his family's farm. His dedication was so strong that he got to continue guarding it even in death, for when he passed on in his old age, his spirit found a home in the scarecrow in the fields. Now, he guards against nefarious trespassers and curious, concerned investigators alike, but ironically, not from crows, those pesky creatures that once gave him and his crops so much trouble. Finding death to be even lonelier than his life, he started to take a liking to them and allows them to roam freely about his property. If you can resist the urge to disturb his peaceful, beloved home, as compelling and otherworldly as it may be, you may hear him whistle an old tune for you as you pass on by.
