I don't mind if people post here, Blackstar.

As for axolotls, the very best way to acquire a pet axolotl is to get to know people who already have pet axolotls. You don't necessarily have to meet them in person--online is fine. People who keep axolotls as pets are usually eager to help people who want to become axolotl owners.

Axolotls are endangered in the wild, so people who keep pet axolotls are (1) helping to maintain a genetically diverse axolotl population and (2) adding to the accumulated knowledge about how to keep axolotls healthy. (Don't worry; your pet axolotl will have hatched in captivity, as its parents and grandparents did.)

There are several good axolotl-owner groups on Facebook; I belong to three of them. Just tell the group you join that you're interested in maybe acquiring a pet axolotl, and they will not only help you acquire a nice healthy pet but also help you make certain you have everything set up perfectly for your axolotl before you get it.

If you'd rather join a local group that meets in person, check Meetup, ask about such groups at your local zoo, and also ask at pet stores (and check out their bulletin boards, if they have them). Note that your local "We Like Axolotls" people may not have a group of their own, but may instead be part of the local "Amphibian Fanciers" or "Herpetological Society" or something like that.

By the way, a pet axolotl has a rather long lifespan--ten to fifteen years, almost as long as the life of a pet dog. So becoming the owner of an axolotl is more of a commitment than is, say, setting up an aquarium for tropical fishes.

Afraid not, Blackstar. For one thing, they aren't tropical. Axolotls like really cool water--about 64 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 18 degrees Celsius.

Also, axolotls are carnivores, and they like to hunt. Fish kept with them tend to become prey. This is bad for the fishes, obviously, and can also be very bad for the axolotls. There are some fish that axolotls really shouldn't eat, such as those with spines. However, axolotls do not know this.

However, it is okay to keep axolotls with other axolotls, as long as all the axolotls are the same size and same sex. When relaxing, they tend to relax on top of each other, leading to the Internet meme "Staxolotl" (which has a lot of different images).

A pet axolotl isn't difficult or expensive to keep. The hard part is getting their aquarium set up for them. When I got Button, I thought I knew how to set up his aquarium, because I'd kept tropical fish for years. I should have done some reading first. It isn't really harder than setting up a tropical tank; it's just different.

Fair warning: axolotls can be amazingly silly creatures. They are both curious and derpy.

The technical term for a baby axolotl is "larva," but people who keep them as pets refer to a baby axolotl as a "littl."

I live in Queenstown, new Zealand and I haven't seen any axolotls anywhere, I searched it up and it says its allowed but uncommon. I want to get it from SPCA, the one in Dunedin. How big of a tank do they need?

The minimum size tank for 1 axolotl is 20 gallons. If you want to keep more than one, just add 10 gallons per axolotl. However, they enjoy having extra room to move around in. They have individual personalities: some like to walk around, some prefer to swim most of the time, some are climbers, and some like to float around the tank like little balloons.

The Facebook group I belong to, "Axolotl Obsessed," includes a number of members who raise and sell axolotls. They are pros at things like rescue axolotls and how to safely ship axolotls.

Button was a gift. I had started a new job, and this fellow working at one of my accounts had a littl in a tank on his desk. The person training me introduced me to him as a fellow axolotl fan, though I had never owned one. The fellow told me he and his wife owned the parents, and they had two other littls they needed to find homes for. He offered to let me adopt one. So I bought and set up a 20 gallon tank, despite difficulties due to a blizzard, and I picked up Button and brought him home once the littl was well over 5 inches long.

I'm sorry you can't get on Facebook yet. Feel free to ask me any questions you'd like, although from this point we should probably exchange PMs rather than posting here.

Here's a photo of Button with one of the moss balls in his tank. Some axolotls like to move moss balls around.
