so i dont have to do anyting else?

No. Once you select the trap and select a target, you just continue the turn as normal.

The trap will automatically be used at the beginning of that turn.

I keep trying to capture pets and using up my traps, but it doesn't ever seem to do anything... There is no success, failed, or failed and ran away in the battle log, but my traps are gone. what am I doing wrong? This is very frustrating...

If you're trying to catch pets for the Capture A Sylesti quest, it is a scripted event. When you're out exploring you'll get to a point where Jinxie will pop up and tell you what to do next. There's no need to capture other pets in order to complete the quest, just the one she specifically tells you to capture

Or if you're just having trouble catching pets in generally, is nothing at all appearing in your battle log? because once you've gotten to where you're able to catch pets there should be some text, you're right.

Yes, I read that in the pervious posts thank you. I already completed that quest. I am trying to capture wild ones now.

That is really odd, it might help out when Krin or Fai get on if you get a screenshot of some kind when it happens? (I know it seems silly to take a screenshot of something not showing up, but perhaps it will help to see the whole turn in the chat log) I hope it all gets fixed for you ;-;
