How do you know what buffs the boss has?

When you're battling the boss, you can hover over the symbols on the boss side to see which buffs it has.

You can't 'hover' on mobile so I'm often afraid to push buttons.

I love doing "crack the code" type things so I used translating the paper as an excuse to spend two hours at my desk to do just that.

The boss keeps getting the courage buff, but I'm pretty sure my pet's strength is high enough. How high does it have to be? I can only get him to 33% health before losing and it's driving me insane.
