Absol makes a mess Bakes A Ladybug Cake

Much love for ladybugs on this thread it seems.

It begins. Since it's going to be a marbled cake, I've got two kinds of cake mix.

Mixes mixed, and dyed to match the colors of the ladybug with heavy duty gel food coloring. Can't get a good red on a white mix otherwise!

Made the marbling by alternating spoonfuls of each mix, and swirling them together very gently. They're ready to be baked.

Looking good post-baking.

The bottom cake had to be flat to stack the other cake on it, so I cut the top of it off by pulling a loop of fishing line through it.

Left the ready-to-be-layered cakes to chill for a bit in the fridge while I made the frosting. This one's whipped heavy cream and powdered sugar, dyed red of course.

Iced the middle of the two layers

After stacking the cake I had to carve it into the shape of a ladybug. I have never carved a cake into a shape before, it looks like a right mess in this shot.

However, after a lot of fighting with the cake and very gently frosting it, it's starting to look buggy~

It can seee youuu! The face and spots are made from Sugar Sheets - flat, edible pieces of sucralose.

Added more spots, while being sure to make them symmetrical, and antennae. So cute!

Side views.

Happy Spring!

Bonus cake cutting.

Edible Bug Snack

I was very tempted to do a cake, but I believe one ladybug cake a year is enough for me, so instead I got my two girls excited at the prospect of an edible bug snack, cupcakes and cookies it is! Better to bake in teh summer heat.

1. The ingredients, some pictured here didn't go in.. grapes just didn't wnat to cooperate.

2.First the cupcakes, I did devils food, it looks a lot like dirt XD

3. In trays and cups!

4. Baked!

5. Icing mixed with green food colouring, please bear with my cruddy attempt at a leaf in iceing

Lumpy leaves, would not go smooth XD

6. Cut strawberries, here comes the bugs!

7. Melted chocolate, yeah you know where this is going XD

8. Dipped and used a spoon to draw chocolate legs under them, and there are the candied eyes!

9. Spots and lines added, also some chocolate eyelids. So they don't look soooo scared.

10. added bugs to leafs! yummy yummy buggies, could probabaly stop here but Nope!

11 .Cookie batter, easy mix just needed to chill

12. Cookies cut, also did flowers XD

13. Baked!

14. Unfortunately I missed taking pics of all the crazy that happened during decorating of the cookies, suffice to say sugar sprinkles were EVERYWHERE!!! The girls had fun decorating teh few I didn't guess which ones are mine XD

15. And Final snack! presentation form XD

Thank you Pickless, They were fun, Super tasty, and a great experiment! I never dipped fruit in chocolate before to make decorations.. will do it again (my girls love bugs as cakes, did a fabulous ladybug themed birthday this last year XD, admittedly that's where the Idea of using strawberries came from.. just wasn't in season in january)

I had a lot of fun with this one. I didn't have a lot of baking items around the house, so instead, hooray for random foodstuffs! Well, without further ado, here's my franken-abominaton food insect! XD

Items assembled!

Had to experiment. First banana head did not go well.

The head/neck would not stay up on it's own, so I needed to use something for support.

Another angle. The eyes are lychee gummy candies held in place with pasta noodles~

This is what my creation is based off of, the Giraffe Weevil! A rather interesting inscet! :DD
