You will have to of completed the storyline as is available at this point in order to access the MZ.
I am pretty sure I already know the answer to this, but does that mean that we have to have completed the Dungeon of the Forsaken? I have NOT been able to get anywhere with it and I was just making sure.

No, DotF is a side area. You don't have to do it for the story; it's kind of like an extra challenge.

You have to beat the storyline so far, I believe is the requirement, which effectively requires you to get to level 60. Just gotta clear your way through everything of Astryl's Vale so far, and you'll be good.
