TL;DR

Theme Design Contests are to design a colour set. You are not designing a singular pet, or a pair of pets, the trait(s) you pick are only to display the colours.

Only post one single colour set for each species- if you post more than one it is grounds of Disqualification from Consideration.
You can post multiple images of your designed colour set using different traits, but you cannot have multiple images of the same species that have differing colour slots (eg. Male with red c1, female with green c1). Having two images of one species each with different colour slots counts as two designs.

Eg, these nixi have different EC and G3 colours, and are thus would be considered Different Theme Submissions

Preferably fill all the colour slots.
Every single one of the 12 colour slots should be filled. If you want white make it very very slightly off-white in that hue, even if it's just a minute amount. That demonstrates that it was a deliberate colour choice.
If the pet is a species that doesn't use AC1 and AC2 in any traits, you could potentially leave them blank, but may as well make a guess at a colour that might work.
This one is not a necessity and will not disqualify a submission, but if the design is chosen as a theme it can leave a theme open to very noticable colour swing on any slots left as FFFFFF (Pure White)

The designs cannot be images you have uploaded via a site such as Imgur or Photobucket, they must use the Sylestia Pet Image Code.
Not using the Sylestia code disqualifies the entry from consideration.
There are guides- including this very thread- that cover how to get the image links if required.

Pay attention to the End Date- you can change your entries at any time up until then, but shouldn't after.
Contest threads remain Pinned- and thus, Open- until Krinadon and Faiona have delivered the prize PMs towards the end of the Fest the Contest was for. They remain Pinned to remind them that that has not yet been done, not so people who are late can post.
Entries submitted after the end date are unlikely to be considered.

On using existing pets as theme designs

On using existing pets as theme designs

When coming up with designs for themes, there may be pets that currently exist whose colours you think would make a good theme design.

In this case, the pet in question cannot in any way be someone else's' design.

For example,

Someone asked us about using extant pets as theme design submissions/ the basis of theme design submissions, as we don't cover that in the guide (yet).

Consider the following categories:

Wild-caught non-themed

Technically fine, best if colours are altered for the design submission so all colour slots work together as a proper theme design

Dyed wild-caught non-themed (dyed solely by the player)

Okay

Dyed wild-caught non-themed (dyed by a different player)

Not Allowed

Pets generated via Essence/Regen (by the player)

Okay

Pets generated via Essence/Regen (by the player + other players (designed/ mostly designed/ partially designed by other users, but generated by the player)

Not Allowed

Pets generated via Essence/Regen (by a different player)

Not Allowed

Project pets (from projects belonging solely to the player)

Okay

Project pets (from projects by the player + other players (a collaborative project, or projects where other players designed or had input on the design of the project colours))

Not Allowed

Project pets (from projects belonging another player)

Not Allowed

Random offspring (non-pb, non-project) that the player has bred

Technically fine, though as with wild non-themed pets you'd likely want to tweak colours

Random offspring that other players have bred

Not Allowed

Pets bought from other players

Not Allowed (maybe if it's wild-caught, unthemed, and undyed, though again you'd want to edit it)

Quoting Krinadon:

"If one were to submit a Themed Design into one of our official contests, it is always assumed and expected that they are the original creator/owner of that design. So that would exclude any design submitted that was based on another players' pets/designs.

However, if you submit a design based on one of your own originally created pets, then that would be fine.

In regards to pets that have been traded or randomly created (wild), I just would still apply the same rule. Do you own it? Did you create it (or was it created for you)?

Basically, if there's any question that someone else can lay claim to the design, then don't submit it."

---

There might be other categories we haven't thought of, but this should give a guideline that you can use
