It is said that our kingdom of hyrule was built by the sacrifices of two noble spirits, who existed to protect the land which the three goddesses Nayru, Farore, and Din, so lovingly created. However it was not without bloodshed that our kingdom came to be. The stories have become morphed over time, their intimate details lost to the countless generations since their events transpired. Even still there are a few things we can be certain of. These few small fragments of truth, when woven together tell a most intriguing tale.

...Prologue...

When the three goddesses left this world they left behind the Triforce, three sacred triangles said to contain a portion of their power. They entrusted the triforce to the goddess Hylia, who faithfully upheld her duty for countless generations. Never once during all this time did Hylia leave the sacred ground where she presided over the triforce, that was until a mortal entered the sacred ground.

A young hylian warrior no older than twenty was somehow able to forgo the many barriers that surrounded the sacred ground, and found himself in the presence of the goddess Hylia.
The young man was wounded and surely would have perished had the goddess not taken pity on him and tended to his wounds. Once the man was able to speak he was able to tell the goddess of how he had ended up in this state.
He explained to her that the outside world was at war. The many different races fought against one another in hopes of claiming precious land, there were no allies in this war only enemies.

The young man was shocked to learn that the goddess had no knowledge of this and inquired as to why she never thought to tend to the outside world as lovingly as she did the sacred ground. Hylia explained that were she ever to leave the sacred ground and abandon the triforce the golden power would be left to the hands of the mortals, who were influenced by their own desires. The young man reluctantly agreed with the goddess and thanked her for her kindness before departing to aid his people in the war, for he did not have the heart to abandon them.

In the days to follow the goddess found herself pondering the words of the young warrior. Why was she so helpless to aid the mortals living outside of the sacred ground. Eventually she found that she could not sit by any longer, and pleaded with the three goddesses to grant her the freedom to leave the sacred ground.

The three goddesses denied her, stating that it was not the place of a goddess to meddle in the affairs of mortals. To this Hylia responded that she would renounce her godhood in order to aid the mortals. The goddesses denied her yet again, saying that without Hylia to protect it the triforce would fall into the hands of the mortals. This Hylia found she could not refute so easily, that was untill she remembered how valiant and selfless the young warrior had been.

Hylia told the goddesses that not all mortals were so vain and selfish as they thought them to be. The goddesses finally agreed to allow Hylia to leave to aid the mortals under two conditions. Firstly she would renounce her godhood and become a mortal, and secondly the triforce would be divided into three and entrusted to three mortals chosen by each of the goddesses. These mortals would be those who best represented the values each of the three goddesses held most dearly, power, wisdom, and courage.

Hylia agreed to these conditions and departed the sacred ground now bearing only one third of the triforce, the triforce of wisdom gifted to her by Nayru. The triforce of power was granted to the king of the gerudos, who had lead his people in battle with such great success that Din acknowledged his power. And lastly the triforce of courage was granted to the young hylian, who was willing to put aside all else to aid his people.

What transpired next is most difficult to say but what is known is this. Together with the aid of the other two bearers of the triforce, Hylia succeeded in uniting the races and became the first queen of hyrule. However the bearer of the triforce of power betrayed the others, it seemed his lust for power was so great that it surpassed his loyalty to the goddesses. And so the queen and her hero were forced to strike down the bearer of the triforce of power, and returned peace to hyrule.

However it was not to remain so for in order for he triforce to remain safe it was bound to the spirits of the three chosen, and so it came to pass that the chosen would eventually reincarnate and their old conflict would begin anew.
With the aid of the goddesses the queen and her hero were able to defeat the bearer of the triforce of power again and again, though not always with such resounding success.

The time we live in now is one of peace. Though hyrule had once fallen in the conflict of the three chosen, it has since been born anew. The last incarnations of the three lived centuries ago, and so the legends faded away as they had so many times before. However it seems that once again the spirits of the three chosen are beginning to stir, and with them their long forgotten war prepares to spring to life once more. Or so the rumours say.

Basically this is where I'm going to put links to images such as concept sketches or screenshots of images made in certain online character creators. This is to give the readers a greater understanding of the characters, scenes, and items in the story (mostly because if I described every character I would probably get carried away and spend an entire paragraph describing them.)

...Chapter One...
A Far Off Dream

It was raining heavily over hyrule castle town as Link made his way towards the palace stables. The young man was in such a foul mood that he hardly noticed the far off rumbles of thunder or the icy cold winds.
He had gotten into an fight with his elder brother Aldin at dinner, and had stormed out of the dining hall while he could still manage to contain his rage. Aldin was in Link's opinion, one of the least pleasant human beings on the face of the earth, and their frequent arguments only served to deepen his distaste for him. There was no doubt that the altercation would have turned physical if Link had stayed any longer. Luckily for Aldin however, Link had caught the disappointed look on his father's face, which was cause enough for him to want to leave right away. He couldn't stand that look, one which seemed to regard his entire existence as a mistake. And so here he was now, trudging across muddy ground in the pouring rain, headed towards one of the few places on the palace grounds that he genuinely liked.

Link unmatched the stable doors and pulled them open without so much as a creek from the old oak doors. It was surprisingly warm inside the stables, Link supposed this was because they were so well built. Though built of stone and wood, there wasn't a single crack in the whole structure, as to be expected from the old hyrulean architects.
Link closed the doors behind him and made his way past several rows of stalls, each containing a magnificent white horse. Sired from the most beautiful horses in the kingdom, they were the royal family's personal steeds. But as beautiful as they were link had never preferred them, they seemed too dainty to be of any use, all they were good for was looking pretty.
Link moved past them to the back of the stable and through a doorway to a separate, much larger section of the stables which housed the rest of the horses. The horses here were nowhere near as beautiful as the previous ones, but they were in Links opinion, far more favourable. Strong workhorses used by the servants to preform various menial tasks dozed calmly in their stalls, all except one.

A stall at the very end had been modified to resemble the larger ones in the previous stable, and within this stall stood a strong silver bay mare, above the stall was a plaque that read Epona. Link walked over to her stall and was greeted by an enthusiastic nuzzling from the mare whom he patted on the neck in appreciation. "Hey there girl. You don't mind if I spend the night here do you?" Epona's only answer was a swish of her tail as she turned to take a drink of water. Taking this as a positive response, Link moved around to the corner of the stable where the hat bales were kept and lay down on top of them. Sure it was less comfortable than his bed in the palace, with pieces of hay poking him in the back as he settled down, but it was more than comfortable enough to send him off to sleep in a matter of minutes.

Link opened his eyes to find he was standing atop a hill overlooking a lush green field laden with the aftermath of a brutal battle. There were no bodies left and all items of any value had already been taken, but the trampled grass and pockmarked ground spoke vividly of the events that had transpired here.

Standing next to him was a woman with long blonde hair and pointed ears. She wore a dress of a material so delicate and pure that it seemed to be almost ethereal in nature. The fabric seemed to catch on the slightest breath of wind, the delicate gold embroidery along the hems gave the appearance of light dancing on the lily white cloth. This woman was beyond anything he had ever seen before.

The woman slowly raised her arms and placed both hands over her heart. She took a deep breath, and link felt his heart give a small leap in his chest as the woman began to sing.

En Da Shei Bu
No Bie Shun Du
Dien Shu Twu
Kiewenu Sa Lei

The sound of her voice was like wind chimes in the gentle breeze atop the hill. The tune was somehow familiar to him, though he couldn't remember ever having heard it before. Even still Link felt compelled to join her, to contribute something to that beautiful melody. He found himself reaching out to her, desperately trying to reach her, to hold onto some part of this otherworldly creature that stood before him.
The woman stopped singing abruptly and turned to face him. There were tears in her eyes even though she was smiling. Link felt his heart break at the sight, though he couldn't possibly say why.
The woman shook her head and began to speak, but Link couldn't hear her words. The next thing he knew he was falling backwards down into an abyss, swallowed by endless darkness.

Link awoke expecting himself to still be falling through the void, only to realize that he was lying atop a stack of hay bales in the corner of the stables. He sat up slowly and rubbed his temples, he had been having that dream a lot lately and was reasonably troubled by it. With a sigh Link climbed down and brushed himself off, taking the time to stretch his limbs before setting out into the castle grounds.

*Draft*
...Chapter Two...

Link strode across the dew covered grass, deep in thought over the possible meaning of his recurring dream. Rarely could he remember a dream as clearly as he did this one, it was almost like he had actually been there or possibly that it was a memory. He shook his head at that thought, it was impossible after all he had never once left hyrule castle town.

"Link! There you are!" The voice of Link's elder sister Fariel rang out as she ran towards him, holding up the skirt of her nightgown in a rather dainty manner. Link smiled at his sister before catching the worried expression on her face and switching to a more serious expression himself. "Is something the matter?" Link asked as Fariel stopped to catch her breath. "You've been missing since dinner, where have you been? Father was worried about you." Link scowled at the mention of his father. Yeah right... worried.

Fariel brushed the hair away from Links face and frowned. "We thought that perhaps you had fallen from your horse and been injured." Fariel looked him up and down for a moment, no doubt noting just how filthy he was. "You didn't, did you?" Link pushed his sister away and ran a hand through his hair, extracting a piece of hay as he did. "I slept in the stables, thats all."
Fariel raised her eyebrows in a half curious, half concerned way. "Again? Link you've been acting really strange lately, is everything okay?" Link patted his sister on the shoulder reassuringly, "I'm fine... really."
There was a rather uncomfortable moment of silence between the siblings before Fariel finally gave a reluctant sigh and motioned towards the castles nearest entrance. "Go get cleaned up, I'll see you at breakfast."

Breakfast... well that should be something to look forward to. Sitting at a table with several of his least favourite royals, while nervous servants rushed about refilling goblets and fetching dishes. Yes this was his life, as much as he would like to deny it. All of the good morning young master's, and welcome back my lord's thrown at him as he made his way to his room only served to sour his mood. Despite his comfortable lifestyle, Link couldn't help but feel like a caged animal on display for the nobles.

Prince Link III of Hyrule... what a farce, he thought to himself.

I have laid out the basic plot of the story at this point and have planned a total of 37 chapters, plus the prologue and an epilogue.

If you would like a list of the chapter titles I would be glad to post it somewhere (I may start a second thread for discussion so this one doesn't get too crowded)
