On the leaderboard for the festival it says "you have not yet participated in this contest" but I have killed lots of things in the festival zone. What do I need to do differently?

Are you checking the boards related to the pets in your party? (Checking your stables, that would be the zolnixi and qitari boards, as those are what you currently have on your party, and thus are what you're fighting with)
