Helga took a deep breath and lifted her eyes to the sky. It was a beautiful day,
bright blue skies, fluffy white clouds, and birds singing cheery songs. The world seemed to be reflecting her mood, and Helga tried to smile...but for a second she couldn't even muster one. Suddenly there was a little darkness that passed over her face, brief but deep. Helga quickly tried to cover it up.

"Perfect!" she trilled when Rowena gave in to the idea of visiting Godric, "We should go tonight after we close.
The sooner the better!"

She threw herself back into her work with gusto, her strong hands working hard and fast to finish washing and wringing and hanging her last load of laundry. The more she worked, the more she was able to dispel the brief moment of sadness she had had before. She knew where it had come from, and the image was still fading in the back of her mind, an image that came to her ever now and then, one that always gave her a lurch in her stomach...

Dark hair, with that naturally messy look. Emerald eyes that sparkle with intelligence and just a touch of mischief. A bearing of such confidence and an aloof smile that held all the mysteries of the world...

Helga gave her head a firm shake. It was no use, Salazar still smirked at her from the far reaches of her memory. There was no sense in thinking about him though. Just because they were going to see Godric didn't have anything to do with the other boy they had tutored with in their youth. Salazar had left years ago to pursue his passion for potion making. Not to mention he had never even noticed Helga. It was best to just push the thought from her mind as she always did.

(Timeskip)

The rank stench stung her nose long before the tavern even came into sight. Rowena pinched her face briefly at the smell of dried puke, fresh puke, and alcohol. Taverns were disgusting, she decided as she approached the pub with Helga, Helena pressing to her mother's side as they walked, her pudgy little hand grasping her mother's slender one tightly.

"Mama, I don't like this. I'm hungry."

Helena's small voice piped up as they entered the tavern. "Hush, Helena," Rowena instructed with a small sigh. Her royal eyes travelled across the tavern with a look of absolute abhorrence until they rested on a man across the tavern.

A muscular build, stocky, reddish-blond hair that was overgrown and pulled back. Wary eyes that surveyed the crowd before him, silently gathering information. "It's unmistakable," Rowena commented to Helga. "Same face, same eyes. Very different hairstyle. He's going to have to get that cut," she elaborated.

She noticed a man off to the side, reeking of drunkenness, eyeing Helena with a smug grin on his face. Rowena immediately pulled her daughter closer, tightened her grip, and sent the man a threatening glare. He seemed to notice and turned away, grumbling about something or another. Helena still remained oblivious of what had happened. Ro was desperate to get out of that tavern as soon as possible. Not only because of her own preservation, but because she did not want her four year old daughter anywhere near a place like this.

It was evening time, and the tavern was crowded with seedy looking men huddled over their stew bowls or having secretive conversations with one another in dimly lit corners. The air was thick with pipe smoke and the stench of stale beer. The appearance of two young women and a small child caught everyone's attention, including Godric, though at a glance he appeared once more absorbed in cleaning his glassware. In reality his multi-colored eyes took in everything, assessing the situation constantly for signs of trouble. Old Harold was eyeing that little girl in a way that sent a chill down Godric's spine...

"You ladies lost?" Godric asked cheerily, hoping to hurry them along to where ever there were going, since this surely couldn't be their destination, "The inn is two streets over...wait, Rowena?!"

Godric set his glass down abruptly and took a much closer look at the women standing before him. Sure enough, those piercing blue eyes, the ones that never missed the tiniest detail, were the same as ever. She had grown into her considerable height quite well, and her intelligent face had an angular shape that Godric found quite pleasing.

"And little Helga, I presume," he said with a mischievous grin, since the woman standing next to Rowena could be no one else, then turned his smile to Helena, "Who might this little tot be?" He hoped his interest in the newcomers, and his reputation for dealing with troublemakers, would keep Old Harold at bay. Hopefully...

-----

Helga made the mistake of taking a deep breath as soon as they stepped into the tavern, which caused a little coughing fit that drowned out much of what Rowena said about Godric. This place was much more dark and dingy than she had imagined. She kept her smile in place, though even her sunny disposition wanted to run and hide in a place like this.

"Godric!" Helga exclaimed, perhaps a little too loud and with more than enough enthusiasm, beaming at their old friend, "Its so good to see you." She gave him a playful scowl at the mention of 'little Helga', something that Godric had been fond of calling her in their youth, despite her plumpness, since Helga was the only one in their group shorter than himself.

As Godric approached, Rowena lifted her chin slightly, despite looking down at him a little already due to the height difference. She had always been taller than the others, even exceeding her father's height. Her mother's... almost. She kept a blank face throughout his speaking, the only emotion visible on her face a slight disapproving frown that she almost always wore. His hair was obnoxious. His eyes were decent, though, she decided.

She could hear the guy from before, who was eyeing her daughter, mumbling about something to some of his intoxicated friends, who gave sharp barks of laughter. A new bubble of fiery rage rose within her, but she forced it down, not wanting to pick a fight so early into being here. Godric was almost as cheery as Helga in the exchange. Almost.

When he mentioned Helena and smiled at her, Rowena instinctively pulled her daughter behind her, her grip on the little girl's hand ironclad. "She is none of your business," Rowena stated defensively and decisively. She could feel Helena poking her head out from behind her mother in spite of this.

"Who's that, mama? And I'm still hungry, you know," the four year-old told her mother matter-of-factly.

Rowena gave her child a reprimanding look. "Helena, in a job like this, I honestly doubt he can feed himself. You need to wait," she hissed to the little girl, hoping Godric didn't hear.

Yes, definitely still the same Rowena, which was hardly surprising. Godric kept a smooth look on his face and a mildly amused grin as she frowned at him. He had learned long ago to pay her remarks and scowls no heed. She had always been a grouchy know-it-all, and that clearly had not change.
Her daughter, for he really hadn't needed to ask, looked like a charming little girl. Clearly Helga was having a significant influence.

Rowena's last comment about his job reached Godric's ears, but his focus was now on Harold, who was whispering with his compatriots in a way that made his blood boil and his eyes narrow. Clearly Godric's interest in the group was not enough to deter the drunken fool. He was going to have to do something...but not with the kid present. Well, time to improvise!

"My dear Rowena," Godric said, wrapping his arm firmly around her waist, as he was not tall enough to reach her elbows and, let's face it, the waist was a better option, "You are a charmer as always. Now why don't you sit down here and I'll have one of our attendants get your beautiful daughter something to eat." He steered her towards the bar and sat her down on a stool, placing a hard hand on her shoulder.

"Mellie!" A young teen, whose gender was hard to determine underneath her kerchief and shapeless clothes came rushing out of the kitchen. Godric indicated Helena. "Would you please take this little darling into the kitchen for something to quell her appetite? And just ignore her mother's protests, shes a bit of a grouch."
Mellie nodded and led Helena into the back.

The moment the child was out of sight, Godric's smile slid off his face, and a most dangerous looking expression took over. He knew he'd be facing Rowena's wrath any second, but he had no time to hear it in that instant. He turned smartly on his heels, leaving both women at the counter and marched over to Harold's table.
He wasted no time or pretense, and simply grabbed the large, pig of a man with one hand and slammed him against the wall. Godric was short, but his stocky, muscular body had no problem pinning the much bigger man there while he stuck his face in close.

"You want to leave...now," Godric said simply, the soft growl in his voice an obvious warning, and then he dropped his grip on Harold. The drunk man, for his size, ran with remarkable agility for the door, disappearing into the fading light. Godric gave the rest of the room a hard look. No words were necessary, the message was clear. Anyone else who tried messing with the girl or the women would be getting much worse.

-----

Helga sighed as she gave Rowena an exasperated look. Her sister-friend had always been so hard on Godric.
Complaining about everything he said and did. Helga secretly believed it was because Rowena had feelings for the man, but she was smart enough to keep those thoughts to herself. Helga had personally always found Godric rather sweet, and he had a wicked sense of humor. So very different from Salazar...

Oh, blast, there were those troubling thoughts again. Helga paid little attention to rest of the proceedings,
for she trusted Godric completely when he sent Helena to the kitchen, and as usual, Helga was rather oblivious to the danger lurking in the corners. She simply sat down at the bar, grabbed the nearest bowl of peanuts and started to eat.

From start to finish, Godric's act was a giant mistake on his part. After being grabbed by the waist, of all places, he had practically thrown her into a chair, after calling her an endearing word that she had not heard in two years. The touch and the word had thrown her mind into overdrive, and she found herself too stunned to intervene. 'Rowena, dear, I'll not have you leaving this castle. You know that.'

She stared blankly at Godric as he sent her child away, and then full-out threatened the man who had been eyeing the toddler. Words swam through her head as she watched him, mouth agape. She wasn't sure how to react. He forced the drunk to leave, scared him off, and then gave equally as threatening a look to everyone in the tavern. He was protecting Helga, and Helena, and her. A defensive feeling came over her.

Rowena didn't need protection. She could protect herself. She also didn't need anyone else to protect Helga or Helena. Rowena could protect them fine enough on her own. She snapped out of her trance a moment too late to intervene. She stood and approached Godric, her mouth still open in complete shock. Her eyebrows furrowed as she stood in front of him. Then, she did the only thing she could think to do. She slammed her hand into the side of his face. That's when she realized that she had no idea where her baby was.

"You complete idiot!" she screeched at him, beginning to pummel him with her fists. "You are going to give me my child back now or so help me, I will make you regret ever being born!" she continued, flurrying her closed hands at him relentlessly.

Now, Godric had been expecting retaliation from Rowena. He remembered her temper from their tutoring years quite well, and his actions had been nothing short of obnoxious. There was simply no way he was going to stand by and watch that drunkard look at such a sweet, innocent child like that. Not in his tavern, and especially not when that child belonged to someone who had been a part of his childhood. He would have never been able to hold himself back.

However, Rowena's reaction was so far beyond what he had been expecting, for a few seconds all he could do was stare at her while she hit him, which he barely felt, and didn't even protect himself from. Even accounting for a mother'd protectiveness, her actions were extreme. Godric's brain ran into overdrive, and he realized...something had happened to her since they were children. What he saw in her eyes hinted at a trauma that he could only begin to guess at, but he knew that look because he saw it in the mirror often. Someone had hurt her.

"Ro," he said gently, reaching up and grabbing her forearms in a firm but not crushing grip, "Ro." She showed now signs she had heard him at first, so he got his face as close to hers as he could, trying to get him to look at her. "Rowena!" Hoping that would jar her from her state of violence, he continued.

"You're daughter is just fine. Mellie!" Seconds after he shouted the last, the kitchen attendant appeared with Helena in tow. The toddler had a piece of cheese and small meat pie in her hands. Godric let go of Rowena quickly and took a step back. "I'm very sorry, Rowena. I meant no harm."

-----

Helga had become rather lost in her thoughts. She had barely registered Godric threatening the drunken man, but she nearly jumped out of her seat when Rowena flew at Godric screeching. A squeaking yelp escaped her when Rowena slapped him, and Helga covered her mouth with her hands, eyes wide. She struggled a moment to get off the stool and rushed to Rowena's side, reaching her right about the time that Godric released her.

"Ro, are you alright?" she asked worriedly, grabbing her friend's hand, "Its all alright."

Blood roared in Rowena's ears as she continued smashing her fists into Godric. She saw his mouth moving, but couldn't hear what he was saying. She could hardly hear anything over the thunder in her hears and the pounding of her own heart. She came to the realization that her fists were no longer hitting him, and he had a firm grip on her forearms. As he brought his face close to hers, Ro flinched. She hadn't been expecting him right there until he was.

Her arms went slack and she stopped fighting back. Tears pricked at the back of her eyes, but she refused to submit. She held them back as she searched Godric's face with her eyes. She was aware of Helga beside her, and leaned slightly in the direction of her closest friend, gaze still on Godric. "Don't ever take her away again..." she whispered, too tired to raise the volume of her voice.

As Helena approached, Rowena backed away from both Godric and Helga, immediately grabbing the toddler and lifting her up. She avoided looking at either of the two magickers now, her head tilted down rather than up as she hugged Helena towards her. Her rage had been extremely embarrassing. Everyone in the tavern had quieted down, and were now staring at her. A wave of shame washed over her, and she was stiff as she turned to face the door.

Whatever they had to discuss could certainly be discussed outside. "Let's go outside," she muttered to the pair, not completely certain they heard her. Regardless, she headed towards the door, exiting quickly as she held her daughter close. Helena just continued to munch on her food.

Godric was aware that most of the chatter in the tavern had ceased and that many of the patrons were staring at him and the rest. He couldn't have cared less, though. Rowena's behavior bothered him more than he would readily admit. He knew in his gut that something had hurt her, deeply, and it made him want to ball his hands into fists and punch a wall. In their youth Rowena had been a bit vain about her intellect, and condescending, but he also remembered her having a sense of humor and mischief. That side of her seemed to have been snuffed out by someone who had best hope to never meet Godric. (Unfortunately, hes not aware Wilmot is dead yet.)

"I promise, Ro," he told her, "I swear I didn't mean to upset you." She had begun to walk away as he said the last. He exchanged a long look with Helga, and then called on of the girls to watch the place while he stepped outside. She was a waif of a girl, but he could pack a punch, and he felt confident leaving her in charge for the time being.

"So what brought you both here anyway?" he asked once the three of them, and Helena, were outside. He was anxious to change the subject.

-----

Helga's heart ached to see her friend in such a state. She knew Godric hadn't meant any harm by his actions, but she also knew some of what Rowena had been through. She was smart, a lot smarter than most gave her credit for, and she knew that Rowena hadn't told her all of it, and perhaps never would. The important thing was, Helga knew why Rowena was the way she was, and Godric did not. She exchanged a look with him, apologetic and worry wrapped into one, before falling her friend outside.

"Ro, you going to be okay?" she asked softly before Godric joined them. She gave Rowena's hand a squeeze and then turned when Godric arrived and spoke.

"Well, we had a question to ask you..." She was unsure if it was wise to speak of Rowena's dream on her behalf after the scene in the tavern, so she waited.

The worst part about having a sort of breakdown like she did, which hadn't really happened to her before, was the aftermath, Rowena decided. The constant asking if she was okay. She waved Helga away with a nod, but didn't reply to Godric's failed semi-apology. She hated the attention. She wanted it away from her as quickly as possible, but of course, the reason they were there originated from her. Of course.

She understood that Godric really hadn't meant to harm her. He had meant to swoop in as the hero he always pretended to be and make things right. He was like that even when he was younger. Whenever someone was hurt, he made sure to take care of them and to get vengeance for their booboo. It was annoying and enlightening at the same time, both then and now. He hadn't intended any wrongs with his actions. The right intent, but the wrong actions to go about those morals. Rowena locked eyes with Helga briefly, still avoiding looking at Godric.

"I've had a recurring dream that included a hog covered in warts escorting me to a particular castle. Helga mentioned you'd been around quite a bit, and might know where the castle is when given a description. She thinks the dream, and the castle in particular, might mean something," she continued for Helga.

Helena complained to be let down, and after a moment or two, Rowena complied. She kept a firm grip on her daughter's hand, though, still slightly shaken up after the event where she had not known where her baby was.
