Yes. My guess is that someone probably paid some Site to DDoS us with their bot network. Basically, they use thousands of compromised devices all over the world to mass spam our Site with repeated connections.

In this situation, it's some random forum post.

It caused issues because I only allowed for a normal amount of max server connections which the bots were easily surpassing. However, after greatly increasing the max amount of connections, our server can handle the bots and normal traffic.

As to why someone would do this, I don't know. Teenage angst can be more than feeble minds can handle I guess.

How much does something like that cost? Why would someone waste money on something like that? ...A nice TCBY frozen yogurt with sprinkles sounds like a better way to chase away the blues.

I can't get over that someone would DDoS Sylestia. Such a happy place. Someone needs to get some fanart going of Krin protecting Sylestia's world borders from hordes of dark shadowy thingies.

It actually isn't that expensive to do, depending on what kind of bots people are wanting to do with them. Krin has the idea though. Typically, computers used to bot are from many many many places around the world. It is a pain- I'm more used to it happening to things like the Playstation Network and Battle.net, than online web browsers, as I "think" browsers can handle it far better than massive gaming sites.

And it very well could be random as far as hitting us, or someone could be unhappy with how things are being dealt with, or someone in the past wanting to exact revenge....its....dumb.

Huh, interesting. I'm familiar with Playstation and Blizzard being attacked.. But they're so big with tons of easily raged lifeforms playing, just seems like the cost of business. But Sylestia is just so mild and gentle.

My first thought was revenge, too. But it's interesting that it could be random; I didn't really think of that. *huggles everyone!* Stick together, we'll make it through this~

If I had to guess, some random adolescent thought it'd be funny or wanted to show off and decided to do it to Sylestia. And I imagine they either knew the basic technical know how to do it themselves or had a credit card laying around to pay for a small burst of it.

I can't imagine it had anything at all to do with revenge or anger towards us... we haven't done anything to upset anyone lol. Unless they're just angry at something arbitrary.

Anyway though, hopefully, it will no longer be an issue.
