Here's the short explanation, without going into a lot of history; modern Star Singers are caroling groups that celebrate Epiphany by dressing like royalty and canvassing their neighborhoods to raise money for charities (one group member carries a "star" on a tall pole and walks at the front, so the group can "follow" it).
