I see your point, Diaveborn, but unless we are specifically talking a straight flush, a flush beats any straight. Technically, if two players get four of a kind, the higher-ranked four of a kind wins (four jacks beats four nines, for example). But a straight is defined in poker rules as five sequential cards of mixed suits, and five cards of the same suit always beats that hand. http://www.pagat.com/poker/rules/ranking.html

In hand rankings, a straight flush isn't ranked with a straight. *shrug* I'm not a poker expert but am talking to my hubby right now who just got done doing well in some online poker tournaments, hehe

And actually Moxie, my point is that, yes, a flush beats "any" straight. But the "lowest" hand that beats "a" straight (not "any" straight, because that isn't how the question was worded) is a higher straight.
edit: and yeah, I am not trying to dispute that Faiona is sticking with the first answer! Just trying to explain to Moxie where I'm coming from
