How exactly to pings work?

If you type the username of someone in the bar "ping users" when you post, that person will be alerted when you post. For example: You enter a contest and you asked to be pinged when the contest ends. Then you will be alerted when the contest ends. You can tell if you have been pinged when the tab for forums (which is usually white) will turn orange. Hope that helps!
