I'm sure there is info about this somewhere but I can't find it. Is there a benefit to releasing pets? Do you get some kind of reward?

The only benefit, other than helping the economy by removing unwanted pets, is that you get a slight increase in a chance to find a nest in the Lost Grove.

hi, im having trouble with the battles , and its a person and i cant figure what to do, cause i cant fight it , or do anything, so i was wondering if u could help me?

you can't fight you say ? that's odd, try to enter a fight and follow those steps :
1. select the option fight
2. click on one of your moves
3. select the ennemy to target
4. press 'end turn'
5. the selected target should take damage
if it still dosn't work try a second time (it may have missed), if you did all those steps and it still dosn't work it may be a bug you will have to read the battle log under the exploration screen to be sure. ^-^

I can't seem to defeat the bandits in the Fungus Grove. My pet just keeps dying. I can't seem to level her up. Is there something special I need to do in order to level her up, or should I just keep battling pets in the Trollsblight Caverns and accepting missions?

by fungus grove, you should have your second party slot unlocked, and thus have a two-pet party (go to Esior's Haven's plaza- third slot is unlockable once you reach Sanctuary of Saerielle in the second region, Umbra Forest, by going to the plaza there), which is likely part of why you are struggling.
You should also make sure to equip your pet properly (guessing Cosmos is your party pet, she's lv17 but only has a single equip, and it's a lv0 uncommon one at that (read,,, it isn't good).)
This guide should help (covers the different elements and equipment types, party builds and so forth)
