This sounds silly but I havent been able to see how I can use my AP to purchase customized wardrobe items such as certain hairstyles etc is there a specific button I should see?

When you want to purchase an available item in the wardrobe, i.e.-hairstyles or eye types, just press the the little money pouch symbol on the top right of the image you want. It will give you the option to buy with your advancement points, or diamonds for some of the more extravagant designs.

If you can purchase with either diamonds or points, then just click on the one you want to use and then select unlock.

To add to the answer above, some of the items can only be purchased with diamonds, indicated by the diamond icon on the left-hand side of the item thumbnail. Those which are available for purchase with AP can be determined by the ones with an "AP" sign on the left-hand corner in red.
